Foster Parent Training

Youth Dynamics has experts in the field of foster care who can help guide you through your training and licensing process. This person is called a Family Development Coordinator. They are great resources to help you learn more about the foster care program, what it means to be a foster parent, and how to therapeutically care for Montana’s vulnerable youth.

Have you connected with your local Family Development Coordinator? Are you ready to start your therapeutic foster parent training? If you answered yes to both of these questions, let’s get started!

If you haven’t connected with a Family Development Coordinator, please complete a contact form.

Getting Started

To help you as you prepare to welcome a child into your home, we want to be certain you have access to high quality educational and training materials. Therapeutic foster parents must complete at least 33 hours of training to address the complex needs of youth in therapeutic foster care. These in-depth trainings will help you develop skills to better understand how to meet the needs of your foster child.

Your first Foster Parent Training Module is provided through a partnership with Center for Children, Families, and Workforce Development of the University of Montana School of Social Work . You will register for the first module through their website. All trainings required by Youth Dynamics are free of charge.

Follow the link below and use this Instruction Guide to start your first Foster Parent Training Module:

Once you have completed the registration process you will begin to access your training through the UMOnline learning system.

Your initial training module will include in-depth training on the following topics:

  • Reasonable and Prudent Parenting
  • Positive Discipline Parts 1 & 2
  • Trauma
  • Child and Youth Development Parts 1 & 2
  • Grief and Loss Parts 1 & 2
  • Culture
  • The Legal Process Parts 1 & 2

Important Note: As you successfully complete each training session and the associated quiz, you will be provided with a certificate of completion. Youth Dynamics will need a copy of these training certificates. Please save the certificate as a PDF and either print and submit to your local Family Development Coordinator or email to learning@youthdynamics.org .

If you have any questions throughout this process, please contact your local FDC that is assisting you through your licensing process.
